  1. Dear Professor Wagner,

My name is Artha, I am a PhD student at Universitas Indonesia, currently undertaking a doctoral thesis with social capital as the main interest, in the context of online brand communities.

I am greatly interested in your research paper that is titled “Developing Social Capital In Online Communities: The Challenge of Fluidity”.

In the paper, you have stated there are four factors as antecedents for social capital, and I was intrigued on how to examine those factors.

With all things considered, I am very keen to integrate those four antecedents into my research model. The only obstacle is, how can I measure them?

It would be such a great help if you can provide the measurement scale, or identify certain papers that postulate the measurements regarding those four concepts.

Thank you very much for taking the time reading my email, and kindly considering my request. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

    Sincerely

    Agung Artha Kusuma

  2. Dear Artha,

It’s great that you’re planning to follow up on the paper and integrate the antecedents into your research model. Although the paper is already a few years old, the topic of social capital development in community settings still needs attention. To my knowledge, it hasn’t been addressed in the literature either.

Operationalization is always an issue. Some of the antecendents are more straight-forward than others. You’ll find some pointers for “closure” in the literature on network analysis, for example. “Stability” can be measured fairly well if you have an idea of community membership over time (e.g. active members in a certain time period). “Interactions” could be measured as the replies or comments from different community members to questions, where each interaction creates a link between two community members. In my view, “interdepence” it the trickiest antecedent of all because it relates to the purpose of the community. For example, members in a patient community who suffer from the same kind of disease/condition will likely have a higher degree of interdependence compared to a community that is focused on some kind of leasure activity, e.g. a hobby.

I developed the paper based on the antecedents put forward by Nahapiet and Ghoshal (1998), whose work is very well cited. You may want to look for operationalizations which have been designed as a reponse to this specific paper and then “translate” them to an online community context. In the absense of such work, it would be fair to propose measures yourself and simply try them out.

Please feel free to let me know about your progress.

    Kind regards,

    David
